June 11:
Dairy Youth Cow Camp, Calhoun County Fairgrounds, 720 Fair St., Marshall, MI.

Participants will be divided into groups and rotate between learning stations where they will be introduced to a variety of topics, including dairy breeds, dairy products, fitting and showmanship, dairy judging, identifying feedstuffs and the basics of dairy animal nutrition. The event ends with a game of “Moo Olympics” and an ice cream social. The $5 per participant registration fee includes lunch and is due one week prior to the event. Checks should be made payable to Michigan State University. The Junior Beef Show promises a full weekend schedule, starting off with a beef showmanship clinic presented by the Michigan Junior Livestock Society board at 8 p.m. June 13. A graphic design contest, skillathon, herdsmen’s quiz, and showmanship and junior-owned steer and breeding and market heifer classes take place June 14. Open division classes show in the Beef Showcase June 15.

Taking place concurrently with the beef events will be the Michigan Junior Sheep Spectacular and the Northern Exposure Club Lamb Show. On June 14, contestants will compete in the shepherd’s quiz, sheep skillathon, sheep graphic design contest, showmanship, and breeding sheep and market lamb classes. MSU Northern Exposure Club Lamb Show events will take place June 15: shepherd’s quiz and skillathon, essay contest, graphic design and photography contest, market lamb classes and showmanship.

June 20-22: Spartan Classic Junior Hog Show and Spartan Jackpot Show, Entry forms for any of these shows must be postmarked by May 27 and can be downloaded along with a complete schedule of events from www.canr.msu.edu/anscikids/livestock.html. The Spartan Classic Junior Hog Show and the Spartan Jackpot Show will take place the following weekend, June 20-22. On June 21, youth can compete in the swine pigathon, skills and graphic design contests, showmanship, and prospect pig and market hog classes. The Spartan Jackpot Hog Show takes place June 22.

July 15-17:
Michigan Ag Expo on the campus of Michigan State University, East Lansing. For schedule and parking information, visit the Ag Expo Web site.

July 21-25: Michigan Dairy Expo at Michigan State University Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, East Lansing. Youth and open dairy breed shows, 4-H competitions and association activities. For more information, contact Carla McLaughlin.

The MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education hosts a variety of educational and commercial events, and it serves as the central gathering space for animal agriculture in Michigan. AAI funded total construction of the more than 100,000-square-foot facility that opened in 1996. A variety of events are held in the Pavilion area, auditorium, exhibit space and classrooms 50 weekends a year, from livestock exhibitions to home and garden shows.
